Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

This guide will provide various GIS resources from around the Web and at Michigan Tech.

GIS Web Tools

There are several useful and free GIS tools around the Web for viewing, creating, manipulating, and converting geospatial data.
 

  • Mapshaper
    Mapshaper is software for editing Shapefile, GeoJSON, TopoJSON, and CSV. Mapshaper supports essential map making tasks like simplifying shapes, editing attribute data, clipping, erasing, dissolving, filtering and more 
  • Map Warper
    Georeference scanned map images or photos in this online web interface. You can then download and use the map in GIS software or applications. 
  • Coordinate Conversion
    This Web tool allows the user to convert latitude and longitude between decimal degrees and degrees, minutes, and seconds.
  • Area Conversion Tool
    Easily convert between units of area measurement . 
  • GeoJSON.io
    Geojson.io allows users to quickly view, edit, or create GeoJSON data with attributes on a Web-based platform. No GIS software needed!
  • USGS Extent Helper
    A tool from USGS which provides users with the ability to draw a rectangle on the map and coordinates are returned in a variety of different formats. 

Geocoding

Geocoding is the process of transforming addresses, coordinates, or the name of a place into real world geographic locations on the earth's surface. There are a several different options for geocoding records. 
 

  • Geocoding with ArcGIS Online
    Geocoding through ArcGIS Online is free for Michigan Tech students, faculty, and staff. No desktop GIS software required.
  • US Census Geocoder
    The US Census provides a free online geocoding tool which will allow you to geocode a single record or batch geocode multiple records up to 10,000. 
  • Geocoding in ArcGIS Pro
    Michigan Tech students, faculty, and staff can geocode records using Esri's ArcGIS Pro software.
