The Van Pelt and Opie library is committed to the principles of open access. By making resources publicly available online, open access publishing supports the free exchange of information and ideas vital to scholarly discourse and the advancement of knowledge. As part of this commitment, the library enters into agreements with publishers which allow article processing charges (APCs) to be paid for through the library's subscriptions or to be otherwise discounted for Michigan Tech authors to make their published work open access. The Michigan Tech community is encouraged to disseminate their work openly and to advocate for open access scholarship; the library is committed to supporting these efforts.

Subscribe to Open (S2O) is an economic model which allows publishers to convert traditional journals to open access journals based on the revenue from libraries and other institutions committing to renew their existing subscriptions. Some of the journals to which the library subscribes fall under this model.
Many but not all of the publishers participating in the S2O initiative do not charge article processing charges (APCs) to publish open access in S2O journals. The list of Subscribe to Open (S2O) journals maintained by Ross Mounce as part of the Open Access Directory provides an overview of these journals, including which journals require APCs to publish.
