ACTS: A Bill or Joint Resolution, passed in both chambers of Congress, and signed into law. NOTE: The term 'Act' is used synonymously with 'Law'.
PUBLIC ACT: Act/Law affecting the entire state or nation
LOCAL ACT: Act/Law limited in application to a particular district within a state
GENERAL ACT: Act/Law unrestricted to time, applicable throughout entire territory in which it was enacted (i.e. district, county, state, etc...)
RESOLUTIONS: Legislation introduced in either chamber of Congress, but may be limited in effect to the Congress or one of its chambers.
JOINT RESOLUTION: Legislation considered to have the same effect as a bill. Requires the approval of the Governor. May be used to propose amendments to the Constitution. Designated by H or S, depending on which chamber it was introduced in.
CONCURRENT RESOLUTIONS: Legislation relating to the operations of Congress, including both chambers, or expresses the collective opinion of both chambers on public policy issues. Designated by H or S, depending on which chamber it was introduced in.
SIMPLE RESOLUTIONS: Legislation relating to the operations of a single chamber or expresses the collective opinion of that chamber on public policy issues. Designated by H or S, depending on which chamber it was introduced in.
Acts & Resolutions are used mainly as reference materials. This could include references and citations in case law, compiled laws, reports by and/or to Congress or Congressional Committees, reports by committees created by Resolutions, or even reports on the effects of Acts & Resolutions.
