Frequently Asked Questions

How do I access journals and databases from off-campus?

  • Avoid paywalls by accessing journals and databases from the library website. Authentication with your Michigan Tech username and ISO password is required for accessing library subscriptions from off-campus. Either login first on our authentication page or navigate to online content through our search tabs, located on the main library page.

I need an article but the library doesn't subscribe to the journal. How do I request a PDF of the article?

I’m interested in affordable textbook or course material options for my students or maybe creating my own text. Can the library help?

  • The library can help identify open educational resources (OERs.) OERs are course texts and materials that may be used free of charge. The library also provides a repository, Digital Commons @ Michigan Tech, to house open education materials (OEM) created by Michigan Tech faculty. See our OER guide or contact library@mtu.edu for more information.
  • The library will also notify you if your course materials are available in the our print collections or online subscriptions. Print items are automatically placed on Course Reserve, available at the Circulation Desk just inside the main library entrance.

I have a research or reference question. Who can I contact?

  • Reference and Research services are available via email, chat, phone, and text. Please visit our Ask Us page for contact info and more FAQs.
  • To schedule a more in-depth research consultation with a librarian, fill out the Consultation Request Form and a librarian will contact you to confirm your appointment.

Who is my Library Liaison and what can they do for me?

  • Your department Library Liaison is your advocate for ensuring that the library has resources that fulfill your teaching and research needs. Library Liaisons will also help keep you up-to-date on changes, workshops, and additional library information. To find out who your Library Liaison is, check out the table on our Liaison guide.

How can the library help boost my professional profile?

  • Digital Commons @ Michigan Tech offers worldwide access to research, scholarship, campus publications, and other creative works by members of the Michigan Tech community. View the Digital Commons tab in this guide for more information.

I have questions about inputting data in my Digital Measures (ActivityInsight) account. Who can I contact?

Does the library subscribe to the Chronicle of Higher Education?

  • Yes. The recommended method of access is to create a free Chronicle account using your mtu.edu e-mail address. When you are off-campus, you will no longer need to access the Chronicle via the library website. After registering, you should see a header that indicates that premium access is provided by Michigan Technological University. Premium content is indicated by a green check symbol along with the word "premium" after the article title.

How much does an EndNote software license cost?

  • EndNote is provided at no additional cost to active Michigan Tech students, faculty, and staff. Enter your Michigan Tech username and ISO password to download EndNote from IT's Software Distribution Center. If you are a new user, the library's Guide to EndNote citation software can help you get started. EndNote workshops are offered several times each semester. Check out the workshops page or watch for announcements in Tech Today.

I would like the library to consider purchasing a book or resource that supports my research or teaching. Who can I contact?
